Fargesia Rufa

Background

A type of Fargesia that is said to get up to 9 feet tall. Also known to quadruple in size in just one growing season. (Something that I read online. It would seem that if it does, it expands it's growth outwards faster than getting taller.)

Cold Weather / Ice / Snow Tolerance

This plant continues to amaze. The cold weather and dry winds killed the leaves on 90% of our Yellow Groove early in 2007, however the Rufa looked like it was enjoying it.

The Rufa was covered in snow at least 5 times, dealt with winds, and was locked in ice once as well.

Highly recommend this plant for Zone 5B.

2006

My plant started sending up shoots soon after it was planted (May 8th, 2006) and continuted to do so into October. Never a huge amount, just 4-5 at a time.

2007

March

  • This plant was observed with a ton of new shoots as early as March 27th, 2007 in Western, Pennsylvania.

July

  • Shooting continued in early July, sending new shoots above the current low canopy of leaves.

August

  • Shooting has slowed. Plant is much hardier looking than last, should breze through Winter again.

November

  • Is looking green for the winter. Leaves are showing a slight amount of yellow, but that is to be expected. Leaves are overhanging the wall where it is planted. I really want one of these in my back yard, so I'm either going to split it this Summer, or purchase a new one in the Spring.

2008

March

  • Has survived another winter. It always impresses looking at before and after pictures of this plant.
